Urban gaze

Urban Gaze is a photography competition run by the Gauteng City-Region Observatory (GCRO). This competition is open to all residents of the Gauteng City-Region (GCR) who are over the age of 18. This project is geared at opening up the photography space for emerging photographers and creating a database of images to use in the GCRO’s research publications and online platforms. Successful entries will be shown at an exhibition at the Keyes Art Mile in Rosebank in March 2019.

The gcro

The Gauteng City-Region Observatory (GCRO) was established in 2008 and is a partnership between the University of Johannesburg (UJ), the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (Wits), the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) and organised local government in Gauteng (SALGA-Gauteng).

The GCRO gathers data and conducts research about the Gauteng City-Region (GCR). The GCRO is charged with building strategic intelligence to aid local and provincial planning and management for a more functionally integrated, spatially coherent, economically competitive, creative, innovative, environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive Gauteng.

The GCRO’s research is disseminated through a range of formats such as research reports, Maps of the Month, vignettes, photo essays, videos and interactive visualisations. Much of this research it is displayed visually through the creative use of infographics, interactive maps, graphs, and tables and photographs. All of GCRO’s research is freely accessible on the GCRO website.

What is the gauteng city-region?

The Gauteng City-Region (GCR) is an integrated cluster of cities, towns and urban nodes that together make up the economic heartland of South Africa. The core of the city-region is the Gauteng province, with towns and cities beyond the provincial borders that are tied to the province through various infrastructure networks, the movement of people and goods, and economic networks. These include places like Rustenburg, Emalahleni, Klerksdorp, Emfuleni, Secunda and others. Click here to see which areas fall within the GCR.

The 2018 Urban Gaze competition is the second photography competition that GCRO has run since it launched in 2008. The images in this gallery are just a sample of some of photographs that have been featured in GCRO publications.

The Urban Gaze competition is an opportunity to capture how residents of the city-region view and experience Gauteng. Through this competition, the GCRO will have access to user-generated visual content that captures the ways residents and visitors see and experience the Gauteng City-Region, its physical and social landscapes, people and infrastructure, and resources. This competition will assist the GCRO to aptly represent the region’s people and the environment in its publications. Please note entrants must be above the age of 18 years old and should be residents of the GCR.
